22 Scripture
Verse for Today
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs
22:1)
We underestimate the value of a good, reputable name. A good name is
more desirable than great riches. Often we observe someone living carelessly, not at all concerned about
what others think about them. Later in life when they learn how valuable a good name is, their reputation
is broken beyond repair. The Bible tells us to “abstain from all appearance of evil”.
Even when the deed itself is not wrong, if the perception is detrimental to one’s reputation it should be avoided.
For instance, the hamburgers in a bar may be the best in the city; however, you should not go there to eat since you
may be perceived to be drinking alcoholic beverages. Reputation is very
important; however, one thing is more important: character. Character is what you really are; reputation
is what others perceive you to be. Both are to be guarded with diligence!
